Our new opening times poster
An Eighteenth Century Windmill, (built sometime in the 1730s) the Elphin Windmill originally ground wheat and barley from local farmers. After the end of the Napoleonic Wars, it was no longer required and left to decay, a ruin by 1837. Then in 1992 a local community group began the restoration process and it was officially reopened to the public on 22 June, 1996 by Gabriel Byrne, the Hollywood Actor.

The Elphin Windmill is an Eighteenth Century, renovated and fully working grain grinding windmill, located on the Windmill Road, Elphin, Co. Roscommon, Ireland. It is the oldest, still working windmill of its kind in the West of Ireland.
Originally built in the 1730s, the windmill was allowed to fall into disuse and ruin by 1837 and although a well known local landmark, nothing was done with it until 1992, when a local community group was set up with the intention of exploring the possibilities of restoring it to its former glory. With the aid of grant monies and trainee FAS workers, under a community youth training scheme, the renovation project was begun and overseen by Dr Fred Hammond from Queens University, Belfast (an expert in mill restoration).
The restoration was completed and the official re-opening ceremony was conducted by Gabriel Byrne, the Hollywood actor, whose mother's family lived in Elphin, on the 22nd June, 1996.
The windmill is currently open all the year round for guided tours, except Christmas and New Year.
